Next, said Pulice, many firms opt to acquire an EMS, or engagement management system, which can “really facilitate” an employee’s workflow.

“Normally, when we go into the field and we’re working on an engagement, we have to bring a folder along with all the documents pertaining to the engagement inside,” said Pulice. “But with an EMS, you actually have a digital folder that can include works in progress and lets you organize your paper in an indigenous structure.

“Also, on a typical engagement, you usually also bring an empty folder ready to accumulate client documents to bring back to your own office,” he said. “In lieu of doing that, you can scan the documents, store them digitally, then create a work paper and produce a financial statement, all on the fly.

“Once there is a digital file, it’s a fully integrated process between the work paper and the financial statement,” said Pulice. “Instead of getting a printout and having to open and physically input that information into a separate accounting package, we can absorb that into a digital file.”
